Sowmya Somanath (san Antonio)
DESCRIPTION
Sowmya Somanath is a 2012 graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, with a degree in music. From a young age of 2, she began singing, and at the age of 4, she entered the world of dance. She is trained in Western classical music, as well as both Hindustani and Carnatic vocal styles. Having completed two Arangetrams, she is trained in the Indian classical dance styles of both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, and is currently pursuing Kathak as well.
Sowmya has fused her two greatest passions of music and dance, and is conducting private lessons for all ages. In her spare time, she composes music; Sowmya hopes to enter the music business as a singer/songwriter someday.

Sowmya's Western classical pursuits began at the age of 9. She was a member of choir throughout middle school and high school, ranking second chair in the Texas All-State Women's Choir. In college, Sowmya studied choral literature as well as opera under the guidance of Nikita Storojev.
Sowmya began her Carnatic classical training at the age of 4, under her mother Viji Somanath. Later on, she began training under several renowned artists, including Smt. S. Sowmya and Smt. Bhooshini Kalyanaraman.
Recently, Sowmya was in the preparatory program at the A.R. Rehman music school in Chennai - KM Institute. She trained vigorously in the Hindustani classical style under Ustad Ghulam Ali Akbar Khan and Smt. Shruti Jauhari. Currently, Sowmya's Hindustani vocal teacher is Mrs. Priyanka Baindur of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana.
Sowmya studied Bharatanatyam from the age of 4 under various gurus.Sowmya completed her Arangetram in 2006 under Smt. Shobanaa Bhalchandra, a member of the trio sisters of Chennai and the first disciple of the Dhananjayans. She has also taken workshops with several stalwarts, including the Dhananjayans, Smt. Priyadarshini Govind, and Smt. Padmini Ravi.
Sowmya studied Kuchipudi under Smt. Padma Sonti, a direct disciple of Sri Vempati Chinnasatyam. She completed her Rangapravesam in 2008 under Smt. Padma Sonti.
Sowmya is also currently pursuing Kathak under the guidance of Smt. Anjali Mage in Dallas, TX. Additionally, Sowmya attended an intensive workshop with the world-renowned Kathak duo, Nirupama and Rajendra.
